12 Ways To Find Older Areas To Metal Detect

While there are many different places hunt with your Metal Detector, the thrill of recovering older more valuable coins plus holding in your hands different relics of the past will be something you will want to experience. Finding coins from the 17th,18th and early 19th Century is a far greater thrill then you can imagine.

The answer to finding older sites is "Research!" Where can you find research material?

1-Old Maps - can be found in local libraries, local history books, they show old roads, abandoned railroad stations, many times school buildings and other points of interest that either no longer exist, or people have forgotten about.

2-Old Newspapers contain a wealth of information on almost every page Stories about holiday celebration on the town square park (May no longer exists) Carnival arriving in town (where did they set up?) and much more information.

3-Old Property Tax Records show where older houses, farms, service stations, interstate bus stops, taverns etc.. once stood. Lots of old coins to be found.

4-School Records not only tell you where schools once stood. Find all the roads and paths that students took to get to school. Find out exactly where the building or buildings stood. School playground areas, where outside lunch benches were... etc.

5-Local Historical Societies are a great resource containing valuable information on dozens of older happenings of your town from it's very beginnings up till today... A valuable resource not to be overlooked.

6-Local Museums usually have displays of historical interest as well as many books on the areas history. Spend time with anyone that works in the museum, they generally are part "Historian." Listen to what they can tell you.

7-Senior Citizens are a walking history of your town or city. Take the time to visit the Senior Citizen Homes and events. Make friends with those folks and listen to the stories they can tell.

8-Old Police Reports can pinpoint events that can turn into a "Treasure" spot. Robberies of lake front homes many times ended with the thief throwing his loot into the lake if he was about to be captured. Police calls to businesses or homes that are empty lots right now.. etc.

9-Old Fire Department records can indicate where many building & properties once existed. Probably the best source for what once stood on now empty lots. Fire Departments also participated in many town activities such as picnics and parades. Where did the parades begin and end? Where were the picnics held?

10-Churches - church records will show where the earliest churches were established. Some no longer exist & were torn down or purchased for another business now on that spot. People spent time before and after church to picnic and join in many outdoor activities.

11-College(s) - start small and add more buildings from time to time. Lots of areas outside buildings, sports areas, student eating areas, picnic spots, etc. Colleges are also a depository of information about the towns and cities where they are located. Check the college library.

12-Library - we saved the best for last. No place has more information than the local library. .Check with the Librarian who can direct you to a wealth of information about your town. (Or any town if you want to search out sites in neighboring areas) Libraries are the main "Depository" of information of all kinds,, many times having a number of items discussed above, "old maps, old books, old records, etc". Get a library card, it will really pay off!

J-man (my hubby) bought himself a new Pirate this week. Although we are both Excal users, he wanted something for a back up machine or for company to use. In the past I have owned the first generation Headhunter PI and the second generation Wader........both were very good machines so we wanted to see how the Pirate measured up to the Wader. Of course it is light weight and a very easy swing, the sensitivity is excellent and we were able to discriminate iron starting with a setting of 3. Headset is very comfortable. Coins were found as deep as 10 inches and a gold plated ring was found at 6 inches......loud and clear! Of course iron was dug up just to see what the sounds were and how much discrimination was needed. It is an excellent machine for the beach and performed exceptionally well in the wet sand and at the water's edge............You did well Detector Pro!!!

White's Beach Hunter ID Finds Gold Ring with Diamond & Sapphires!

I just wanted to write in and thank KELLYCO for selling me some outstanding machines. I bought a White's DFX and a Beach Hunter ID from you folks along with a bunch of accessories. I have had some great success of late surf hunting with the Beach Hunter ID. I went to a smaller lake where there is a lot of camping activity and a small swimming area. I started hunting in the shallows and worked my way out deep I found some coins and many bottle caps before a loud sounding of my Beach Hunter ID grabbed my attention.

The machine indicated a non-ferrous object. When I brought my scoop up I immediately saw the shine of a gold ring in the brilliant sunlight. When I pulled the beautiful ring out of my scoop I was in awe of the beauty of this ring that featured 5 diamonds and 8 sapphires, my best find to date. The scoop I used was a two piece Travel Beachmaster bought from KELLYCO. I got the ring on the first scoop in about 4 feet of water. I went on to find a men's gold ring as well.

With my DFX I pulled this beautiful ant ique broach out of the ground at a local park. The broach was down 6 inches. My DFX indicated a VDI reading for high quarter, low half. To my surprise as I saw the round stones of Amber. When I figured out what I was looking at in the hole, I was very careful to remove the soil slowly as I didn't want to dislodge any of the stones or mini pearls. As I found other coins in this section of the park, I believe that the broach was lost in the 1920's.

Minelab Explorer II Finds Old Silver Buckle

I’ve considered myself a Metal Detectorist for about 30 years. On and off since the 1970’s, I had given the hobby up for several years and started getting back out there in 2003. About a mile from my house, in beautiful New Hampshire, there is a farm owned by wonderful folks. It’s run full-time, ‘round year – they grow produce in the summer and Christmas trees in the winter.

Last fall they gave me permission to hunt their property and I've spent a lot of time out there. I've even found many large coppers and some really old 1700's pewter spoons. But my best find was something all together different and very, very old.

I was searching in a small patch of a garden that's not far from where the old garrison once stood on the original farm in 1650. The owner of the property often drives his tractor along the side of the corn garden to access his field, and by chance I decided to go over the area with my Minelab Explorer II.

I got a strong signal and after digging about 5" deep a silver buckle popped out. I didn't even clean the mud off until I got home, but when I did I recognized it right away. I cleaned it under running water and saw a beautiful, small silver shoe buckle that was used from 1650 to 1720. The chape and tongue design are noted in several reference books as those of the Tudor-Georgian period.

I showed the owners and they were really happy to see that piece. They’ve encouraged me to hunt the farm as often as I would like and as a gift to them I hand-painted a beautiful 1800’s bottle to display in their shop. This is the only silver buckle I have ever found there, but it is also one of the oldest pieces in my collection.

Better Than Treasure - Metal Detector Saved Paul's Life!

During my first trip to Australia, in 1983, I found myself out in the far reaches of North Queensland - in the out bush. And I mean "out bush" - not another soul for 50 miles at the very least.

I was so far from help, driving an Isuzu 4x4 into grass over a foot deep when I began to have ignition problems. I had to remove the points and wouldn't you know it, I lost the little screw that held the things all together. It was a bummer of the worst kind, and both me and that screw were no where to be found by anyone. I rolled my little 4x4 back with some difficulty, got my new k-bar knife out and whipped the grass shorter in an effort to find the screw that would get me back to civilization…

Thankfully, while visiting my dad in Florida only two weeks earlier, I had purchased two Whites 6000D series metal detectors from Kellyco in Winter Springs. After cutting back the grass a little I slowly, slowly looked for the tiny screw I had lost. Within a minute I had it, reinstalled it and drove away instead of walking the 75 miles to the nearest civilization and, quite possibly, becoming another outback statistic.

Over the years my metal detectors have saved my neck countless times - and that’s the truth. I’ve even managed to find some treasure here in Australia by finding gold and old coins, hundreds of pre decimal currency coins scattered out here. I moved here permanently in April of 1984 and have never looked back at the U.S. I love it here, a mile of river frontage is close by with real fish in it and I use for bait what you take home, fishing out 25 to 40 pound fish from where the crocs and snakes live. There are also lots of furry critters and parrots of every size and color. Tropical plants abound and the flowers are so beautiful - all the tropical native fruits that come with rainforests. Even now my nearest neighbor is neither in site or earshot, but I’ve got my metal detector, and it’ll save my neck again if need be.

Minelab Sovereign G.T. Finds $800 Silver Bar!

While testing my NEW Minelab Sovereign GT metal detector with a 10" loop in my front yard, I received a signal in "All Metal" mode. I started to dig and the object detected was deep – about 24" down! Finally I hit something solid. The object was very heavy. I took it into the house, washed it off and saw what it was. Very silvery in color and so heavy. I took it to my bathroom scale and it weighted 53.4lbs.

I decided the next thing to do was have it tested. It turned out to be solid silver, worth approximately $800 on today's market. The nugget seems to have been hacked on with an axe or large knife. I live on the oldest road in the United States: Rt. 1, Philadelphia Rd. George Washington traveled this road! How the nugget got there, I do not know, but its true – treasure CAN be found right in your own yard!

1738 George II Half Penny - Found on Thanksgiving Day

As I was growing up in the town of Niantic, CT my father always took me hunting and the Thanksgiving Day Pheasant Hunt was always something special. Now my youngest son and I enjoy a different type of hunting... treasure hunting. We have been treasure hunting for about one and a half years now. The finds just seem to get better the more I learn the Minelab Explorer ways.

My son TJ loves collecting coins and has quite a nice collection. Half of the coins he has are coins we have found. Our dream is to someday find a Morgan Silver Dollar. We once found a 1906 Indian Head Penny, then a pre-1900 coin was our goal. We haven't found one yet but on Thanksgiving Day we found a 1738 George II Half Penny. It was found a short distance from our home at a place we've hunted before. When nine year old TJ removed that coin fromt he hole his eyes became as large as pie plates and he started screaming "WE'RE RICH! WE'RE RICH!"

That coin didn't make us financially wealthy but I wouldn't trade that day for any amount of money. Thanks Kellyco for making our hobby so enjoyable.

1. Metal detecting is one of the few hobbies that really pays for itself with every day finds such as old and new coins, diamond rings, gold jewelry, valuable relics and even buried and hidden treasures. Jars of coins, metal boxes with paper money, gold coins and valuable jewelry were all buried for safekeeping and while many of them have been rediscovered with a metal detector, there's lots more still waiting to be found.

2. Searching for treasures with a metal detector has proven to be a great “stress buster” for thousands of people. Problems seem to disappear when your detector discovers a buried target. You can get away from everyone if you want solitude, or you can meet new people to join you for company.

3. Using a metal detector can be good for your health. Getting out, breathing in fresh air, and walking, as you must, to find different treasures is a great form of exercise. Plus, bending down to dig up a target is an excellent way to trim your waistline.

4. You will certainly make more friends on your quest for valuables and treasures. Many people have been interested in obtaining a metal detector and will find ways to talk to you about what you are doing, where you bought it, what you found, etc. Many of these people might also share a story or two about interesting areas they know you might find old coins or relics.

5. You'll learn about your local history and may even find yourself reading books about the area you're living in. There are probably books containing lots of historical information that go back 50 to over 100 years or more. You may even start going to the library more often.

6. Searching for treasures with metal detectors is a perfect way to get your family involved in doing an activity together. More and more families are joining metal detecting clubs, attending planned treasure hunts where there are prizes galore, and they even have special hunts for kids.

7. Metal detecting opens up interests in other hobbies. A large number of metal detector users found themselves and family members becoming enthusiastic coin collectors. And why not? A penny recently sold for $41,000! You will want to look closely at each coin you recover in coin books or online. Coins are often worth far more than face value.

8. You can now vacation closer to home. There are dozens of places of interest for metal detector users within a short drive from your home. In fact, you can start right in your own city or town. You can arrange weekends for places where people vacation and hunt for their lost coins and jewelry. Weekend camping trips gives your whole family a vacation with more places for you to use your metal detector.

9. Hundreds upon hundreds of treasures that have been lost and discarded can be discovered with a metal detector. The popular television show, Antique Road Show, has shown millions of people that treasures come in all sizes and shapes. Old toys, banks, lead soldiers, pens, watches, jewelry, literally anything you find might be an unexpected treasure. You may easily discover treasures in the ground but also in antique shops and general stores on your way or coming back from a treasure hunting outing.

10. Metal Detecting for treasures is one this countries fastest growing hobbies and has been for the last ten years. There are numerous treasure hunting clubs and groups in many cities and towns that welcome newcomers with open arms. These clubs go treasure hunting to areas that have been well researched. The Only Dahlonega, Ga. Gold Coin Ever Found With a Metal Detector

My favorite places to hunt with my Bounty Hunter Land Star are torn-up sidewalks and old, demolished house sites and with good reason! When I took my favorite find to a coin dealer he looked up and asked “Where did you get THIS?!”

I've been metal detecting for about 7 years, all because I got curious one day about what was laying just underneath the surface. I had been using my Land Star for about a year, and I was hunting alone this particular day with just my detector and a trowel. After about an hour and a half of searching I wandered over to a demolition site where an old home’s yard was all shaved down to dirt. The top 8” of ground was completely gone and scraped off, but I got a good signal about 3 to 4” down.

That was my best find to date - an 1843 small D $5.00 gold piece. You see, Dahlonega, Georgia was home to a U.S. mint from 1838 to 1861, and only minted gold coins. It was a small mint and ceased operation after the Civil War was over, so these coins are pretty rare. To my knowledge, this is the only Dahlonega coin ever found by a metal detector, and its value is still undetermined.

I was on cloud nine when I found it, and the first person I told was my wife. Unfortunately I can't go back to this site for more, but I'll keep my eyes open for those torn-up sidewalks and old, demolition home sites.

Minelab E-Trac Metal Detector Review

One of our top salesmen, Nathan, has reviewed the Minelab E-Trac metal detector. This is great news because he is amazingly experienced and can give us a great idea of how this metal detector preforms. His specialty is Minelab and being a computer-savvy guy, we trust his word.

The E-trac is the newest metal detector in the Minelab line. With the large LCD and the new light weight coil, this detector is comfortable to swing for a few hours. I hunted a local park near my house. It has a wide open field down the middle with park equipment next to a basketball court on one side and tot lot on the other.

Before I went out, I used the E-trac X-change program with my computer to make a few adjustments of my own to upload to the E-trac. It is easy to understand and the upload was pretty fast. While at the park, I was picking up a few modern coins that were near the surface of the ground. They were averaging about 1 to 6 inches. With the controls at your finger tips, the menu is easy to access and make changes on the fly. I started finding more targets at deeper depths. I measured one target to 15 inches.

The improved pinpointing with the new coil made it fast and easy to recover targets. The gauge at the top of the screen was very useful. A crosshair in the middle of the gauge lights up once the center of the coil is over the target. The depth indication was pretty accurate even in the pinpoint mode.

With the new USB port for computer communication, I can see how the possibilities are going to be endless for the capabilities of the E-trac. I give it five stars, and the price, extremely reasonable for the amount of technology this machine houses. It is a great detector for anyone with its preset programming. And with the advanced settings, you may be surprised what this metal detector can do for you!

My name is Mike Bearden and I live in north Alabama. I have been metal detecting since 1969.

I have used just about every brand of metal detector offered to the public in the last 30 odd years and really enjoy metal detecting and field testing different product lines.

Kellyco sent the new Teknetics Gamma 6000 to me to see how well it will perform in my area which is heavily saturated with iron ore and red clay.

I live in the middle of the iron ore belt that stretches from 150 miles north of my home and on down below Birmingham, Alabama.

This ground has proven to be very tough to tame for MANY of the high end detectors that I have tried here over the years.

Just to give you an idea, those gold/red stones in the picture below are iron ore typically found in my yard and throughout the surrounding counties. This place is LOADED with it and if you drag a shop magnet around on the ground, these stones actually stick to it like metal. It's found on the surface and as far down as anyone cares to dig.

After receiving the Gamma 6000 I opened the box, zipped through the 24 page manual and then put it together, installed the battery, turned it on and got familiar with all of the settings. . .

Rarest of all Texas Civil War Buttons Found in Louisiana

My Minelab Advantage metal detector helped me find one of the most rare Texas Civil War buttons ever made.

I got into metal detecting because my wife bought me one for my birthday. 11 years later and I'm still addicted to this great hobby. My favorite places to hunt are private property and plowed fields. The day that I found this button I was searching a plowed field in the state of Louisiana. I had my Minelab Advantage, which I had been using for over two years by this point, and a shovel to help dig.

After about three hours in this field I got a good signal. It was only 4" down and my hunting partner knew immediately what it was. The only Texas Unit button ever made, only a few have ever been found. It's a Waco Guards Civil War button, worth anywhere from $2,500.00 to $3,000.00 - but priceless to me!

I was simply amazed that I found this rare and special button. The first person I told was my brother. Please enjoy this picture of the button, which is in very good shape considering it's age and what it's been through.

Minelab Metal Detector Helps Tony Find Treasure!

In the mid-1970's, my parents bought me a Relco Metal Detector. It had a depth range of about 6 inches, no earphone jack, and you could barely hear the audio tones on the beach when it was windy. But I had a blast with it and I was hooked on detecting.

Now I am primarily a beach hunter in the Orlando area. I hunt with the Minelab Excalibur about 80% of the time. I love the amphibian advantage of this machine and thus, the ability to walk into a good trough as I spot it. I also use a Minelab GT with a WOT Coil when I want to cover more ground, and I recently bought a White's Dual Field Pulse.

As a beach hunter, most of my finds are rings and jewelry. My best hunts have always been the short-focused tactical hunts. Longer hunts are useful for observing beach crowds and conditions, but the finds have not been as numerous.

My most productive spots tend to be recurring troughs that tend to always be on the same spot of the same beach. I think of one trough as my "Diamond Rings Trough" because it has produced FIVE diamond rings in about 15 hunts!

My favorite find to date is a ring that is covered with diamonds. I had been hunting a popular beach and getting no signals at all. I had my Excalibur and I decided to pause for awhile to re-tune it. I slowed down my swings, turned up my volume and moved excruciatingly slow. Then, I started getting signals; LOTS of signals. They were faint bumps, but they were repeaters.

The beach had been sanded in and by slowing down to the extreme, I was giving the detector more time to push to the limits of its capabilities. I dug up a few clad coins and then I heard another bump signals. I could not call it a whisper, in that it was not a faint signal, but more of a bump in the threshold tone.

As I was scooping, nothing came up. It was still in the ground. Finally on the third full scoop in the same hole I was looking at the ring. There were so many diamonds I thought it had to be fake.

But when I arrived home and put the needle of the diamond tester on it, it shot up to green; for REAL diamonds! I couldn't count the diamonds in it so I had to look at the bottom of the ring and count the settings; 51 in total. And I will never forget the value of trying something different when the hunt is not producing.

Treasure Leads of the Week

Block Island , Rhode Island was first visited by explorer Verrazano in 1524 and again by the Dutchman Adriaen Block in 1614. It was considered a sacred island by the Indians and countless numbers of them were buried here.Settlers first came in 1661; remains of their homes are found at several locations on the island. During the Revolution a number of major naval actions occurred close by, which served as a refuge for criminals and deserters during this war.

The ruins of the Mount Ophir Mint are located in the outskirts of Mariposa, Maripoosa Co,. It was built in 1850 by John L. Moffat, part-owner of a mine and assaying firm in San Francisco. Here in February 1851 he coined the first fifty-dollar hexagonal gold coins, which are extremely valuable in today's numismatic market. Several of his workmen are alleged to have buried large numbers of these coins on the premises.

300 Year Old Religious Artifacts & Jeweled Crown Found With a Fisher Metal Detector
"A friend of mine recently invited me to hunt an area he had been hunting for the past few years. He felt like he had recovered most of the things that could be found with a standard 12" coil. After we arrived at the location we discovered it was an old home site.	I began searching the area using using my Fisher 1266x and the 12" Hot Head Coil. After finding several old pieces of iron hinges and farm tools that were 18" to 20" deep, I began walking back to my truck and received a clean signal that was "relay deep." Not Your Average Treasure - One Man's Story Of Finding 7,000 Year Old Fallen Stars
"I grew up in N. E. Louisiana on the family farm. This area was home for Native American�s as far back as 1500 B.C. As we tilled the fields we would unearth all sorts of Indian relics. At an early age I started collecting them. Little did I know this would be training that would later help me in searching for rocks from space. Generally speaking there are three main types of meteorites. They are stone, iron, and stony iron (pallasite). While all three contain some iron, the palisites and iron have the highest concentrations. To locate them I needed a metal detector.	Finding the guys at Kellyco was a great day. J.W. helped me chose the correct equipment the first time. He recommended the Deep Max III by Lorenz. The Deep Max III can handle large frame coils (up to 40 feet) for deep detection and covering large areas. The meteorites I was looking for can be as deep as 7 feet and scattered over an area up to six miles long. With the 40 foot coil the Deep Max III allows one to cover as much as 20 acres a day. This greatly increases the chance of locating a meteorite. Soon after receiving my equipment I headed off to Kansas with high anticipation. After three weeks I had found lots of treasure (junk to me), but no meteorites. Man, this was hard. . ." Treasure Leads of the Week - Ghost Towns

The ghost town of Buford, North Dakota is near the present town of Buford and the ruins of Fort Buford near the Montana State line, McKenzie Co. The town was founded by the American Fur Company in 1828 and abandoned in 1881 when the fort was deactivated. Only about a dozen buildings are still standing.

The ghost town of Dobytown, Nebraska is located one mile west of Fort Kearney on the Platte River, Buffalo Co. During the 1840s it was one of the wildest and wickedest towns in the West. Travelers along the oregon and Mormon Trails and soldiers from Fort Kearney kept the town lively at all times; the cemetery is full of many men who died in gun battles. Several saloons and other buildings still stand.

North Florida Gives Up Lots of Silver Coins!

"My son and I where detecting near what we thought was the foundation of an old house people in the neighborhood said burned down 20 years ago. The roof was evidently nailed together with 10,000 nails and because of the fire they were all over the place.

My son uses the MP3 Pro and I now use the MP5. I am so happy we bought these models as we could never detect this place if we didn't have the great discriminators on MP's. We tuned out all the nails and other junk and started finding lots of pennies, mostly close to the surface. We later moved around to what was the back of the house and the first silver coin found was a 1940 mercury dime followed by a 1045 merc. Then both my son and I got a "HIT" within a few feet of each other. He yelled "Got a silver dollar Dad!". I put my detector down to take a look at what turned out to be 1 Troy Oz. American coin. I started to dig my signal and soon came up with another different 1 Troy Oz. 999 Fine Silver Coin. Both were tarnished but looked really great to us!

We hunted the area more carefully and found many more coins including a 1965 Eastern Caribbean Territories Coin, looks like silver, not sure it is. A final stroke of good luck was a bright American Gold Dollar near the car as we were packing up to go home.

Our MP's have more then paid for themselves in finds and fun and I didn't have to spend thousand dollars to do it."

I bought a White's Classic from Tony at Kellyco about 2 months ago. I went to a cow pasture near new construction of a subdivision in Kissimmee, Florida to treasure hunt with my new detector. I noticed a clump of trees in the pasture and thought there might have been an old home site on the property. After a search of about 15 minutes I had found no home site. There seemed to be nothing but trash around the trees. Then I got a good hit! I dug down about 3 inches and found some silver coins and the 5 dollar gold coin. What a surprise! The coins were in an old leather sack that fell apart when I picked it up. It must be beginner's luck!

A 230 Year Old Button Discovered With a Whites DFX
"Just last month I purchased a Whites DFX from Barbara at Kellyco, and have been having a great time ever since! I as recently hunting a site on a family members farm in Conneticut. It had an old, stone foundation and we've previously found 18th century pottery, nails, pipes and other odds and ends.	I was shocked when I got a 17+ VDI in the stone foundation within the first week with my DFX! I moved a few rocks from the wall, and there sitting nicely protected from the elements was a 1777 USA Continental Army General Service enlisted soldier's button. Orange Grove Yields a Strongbox With Thousands of Dollars
For decades adventurers have plied the shores of Florida's peninsula in search of sunken riches, mostly in vain. But James S. had only to sink a shovel in an orange grove. A few feet beneath the rich, black soil he clanged against an old metal box containing bills in denominations from $100 to $1,000 dating back to 1839.	Two of them were issued by United States bands prior to the Civil War. The oldest, from the Clinto Band of Philidelphia, was issued to a Samuel Benedict for $100 on December 2, 1839. The others were Confederate currency. "I'd just set out to plant a couple orange trees," said the auto leasing company worker. Treasure Leads of the Week

The Site of Fredericktown, Kentucky was located about six miles northwest of Fort Boonesborough and should not be confused with a present town in Kentucky with this same name.

Key West Gold Diggers Looking for Pirate's Chest

Two brothers working on a water well in their backyard have unearthed more than two pounds of gold nuggets and are digging deeper in hope of finding a pirate’s chest full of treasure. “I don’t think there’s any doubt in the world there’s something down there,” said Kent. “It could be a jewelry box. It could be bigger.”

Kent and his brother, Jim, of New York, are renovating a group of classic old Key West houses they bought in 1977. The search in the back yard of a house across the street from author Ernest Hemingway’s former home began Wednesday when a driller looking for well water found more than two pounds of 12- and 14-karat nuggets 18 feet down.

Just as the gold fever started to subside Sunday night, seven more small nuggets weighing three-fourths of an ounce were found. The gold rush was on. Workers using shovels, buckets, pumps – and sweat – have dug a 4-foot square hole down about 18 feet in the backyard of one of the houses they own. Using a piece of screen and a kitchen colander, workers have been sifting the sand much like 19th century prospectors.

Sunday, they turned up eight more gold nuggets. Some of the gold nuggets they’ve found are as large as 3 inches in diameter; others are twisted and bent as if from smelting. One piece has the faint marking of a Roman numeral.

The brothers say a local jeweler valued the nuggets at 12 and 14 karats. With gold selling for about $300 an ounce, they estimate their find is worth a minimum of $10,000. The brothers have promised the workers that helped one-third of the take. One worker admitted the gold made his crew “a bit crazy” and some workers sprayed gold paint on gravel. “We figured if we sprayed enough, people would think it was a hoax and everybody would leave,” the worker said.

In addition to the nuggets, workers have turned up a 19th century half-dime, a hand-forged spike from a schooner, and animal tooth and pieces of brick. They also found pieces of wood and a rough-hewn hinge that the brothers say looks like it could have come from a centuries-old treasure chest. Such speculation is in keeping with island lore of pirates, bootleggers, smugglers and Confederate spies.

A Key West native says the brothers property was a beach several hundred years ago and overlooks a natural deep channel that makes it a perfect spot for a pirate too stash plunder. A Key West historian said it once was owned by William Cash, a colorful character who was one of the island’s riches merchants. Cash died in 1923; he purchased the land in 1894. The historian said, though, that she didn’t think Cash was “the kind who would have buried it. He would have spent his money.”

In recent times, the land was owned by a gentleman who sold it to the brothers in 1977 and moved to Tampa. He still visits the island once a week to sell mangoes and fish from his pickup truck.

Orange Grove Yields Strongbox with Thousands of Dollars

TAMPA - For decades adventurers have plied the shores of Florida's peninsula in search of sunken riches, mostly in vain. But James S. hand only to sink a shovel in an orange grove. A few feet beneath the rich black soil he clanged against an old metal box containing four bill in denominations from $100 to $1,000 dating back to 1839. Two of them were issued by United States bands prior to the Civil War. The oldest, from the Clinto Band of Philidelphia, was issued to a Samuel Benedict for $100 on December 2, 1839. The others were Confederate currency.

"I'd just set out to plant a couple orange trees," said the auto leasing company worker. He had recently bought a small parcel of land in nearby rural Pasco County. "I knew it had to be something solid," he said. "So I just kept digging" and uncovered the steel container. "IT MUST have been three-sixteenth steel, but when I handled it, it just flaked away it was so rusty," he said. He tried piecing it back together without success. But age didn't spoil the currency. The large bill, wrapped in butcher paper, were only slightly discolored, he stated. The city dweller, turned farmer and prospector, said he intends to hold onto his finds until he determines its value.

Amazing Civil War Relic Found 10 Inches Deep, In Another Man's Hole!

"I don't think I would have believed this story had I not dug this find up myself and written about it!I recently went to the latest field, the one where multiple detectors hunt everyday. After searching the lower grass area for awhile and finding nothing of note, I moved toward the far right corner where I had found two good bullets the other day. I found the knapsack J hook in the above photo on Friday. I got a good signal on one of the banks leading towards the railroad track and found another nice confederate gardner bullet about 6 inches down. But I had know idea what I was about to find.

I made my way up to the very corner of the field and that someone had already dug hole there. This was an almost perfectly cylindrical hole about 6 inches across and about 9 inches deep."Now, about half the time when I'm out there and I come across a hole, filled in or not, I run my coil over it to see if the previous digger missed something. I did this with this hole and got a very loud tone that sounded like a surface soda can. " Wow," I said. "What the heck is that and why didn't they dig it up?" I thought maybe the digger had found some junk and left it in the bottom of the hole but I felt down to the bottom and felt un dug, packed earth. I then stuck my probe in the hole to see if I could pin point where the object was. The sound was strong over the entire bottom of the hole. I just kept thinking "What in the world is this?"

Taking my shovel, I started to open up the perimeter of the backside of the hole to see if I could get a better approach to what was in there. Digging deep and behind the signal I started to bring up the shovel full of dirt when I saw something come up. I sat there, stunned for a second trying to comprehend what I was looking at as I was looking at the backside. I plucked the item up and turned it over What I was staring at was a Union (most likely officer's) sword belt plate. The plate is in great shape with just the backside hook being broken; probably the reason why it was discarded. Someone actually left this in the ground???

The only thing I can gather is that maybe the digger had started digging this hole when it was getting dark, they didn't have a flashlight, and they didn't have a probe. But would anyone actually leave a signal that strong in a civil war relic field that was 10 inches in the ground? I guess so. And I thought finding the 1819 Large Cent around other holes in that field was amazing. All I could keep saying all the way home was "Unbelievable", and " Thank you God."

1953 - Stuart Auerbach, CEO of Kellyco Metal Detector Superstore, was first introduced to metal detecting in 1953 via the United States Army. As a combat engineer specializing in mine clearing, Stu learned how to locate and remove buried mines in Korea with the latest in both army and civilian mine detectors. It was more than a hobby - it was a precise, lifesaving methodology.

1955 - As the times changed and the metal detecting industry grew, Stu and his staff at Kellyco dedicated themselves to converting the life-saving precision of army metal detectors to the new found hobby of metal detecting. Coin, jewelry, gold and treasure hunting became the new focus in 1955, as Kellyco staff and "Test Team" members constantly examined the latest information on metal detecting technology and thoroughly tested manufacturer's claims.

1974 - In 1974 professional treasure hunters such as "Indian John" Durham became part of the world-renowned Kellyco "Test Team." Stu spent countless hours in steaming tropical heat testing the ability of new scanner circuits. Their motto was "If they work for us, they'll work for you" and they set out to personally ensure the quality of innovative equipment such as compass scanner detectors and scanner circuits.

1980 - Several years later, in 1980, George Payne was credited with designing the first Very Low Frequency (VLF) circuits. His designs were used in the new, White’s, “Coin Master" and Bounty Hunter "Red Baron" detectors. Of course one of the first places George took his new designs for testing was Kellyco’s office in Florida. The VLF technology was first featured in the Tek/Bounty Hunter detectors.

1983 - George left Tek/Bounty in 1983, but continued to design modern micro processing detectors such as the world-famous Cobra, Cobra II, Cobra SST, King Cobra, and Viper.

1984 - In 1984 John Fetner, Kellyco’s Vice President, became one of the first distributors to participate in a learning seminar hosted by Fisher Research Laboratories. This made him a pioneer in the industry as he was one of the first people given an opportunity to learn everything about the entire Fisher line of detectors. John absorbed all the technical material offered and passed the information to Kellyco staff members and “Test Team” – ensuring that everyone involved with Kellyco remained at the top of the metal detecting industry technology.

1985 - A year later the Kellyco “Test Team” members participated in one of the first White’s Metal Detectors factory seminars. After passing tests and becoming officially certified by White’s, Kellyco staff members were able to answer any and all customer questions regarding the performance and tuning of every White’s metal detector – that knowledge and skill continues today.

1988 - In 1988 Kellyco physically expanded from their 3,000 sq. ft. quarters into a larger building to provide better service to customers worldwide. A 30,000 sq. ft. building on 3.5 acres in Winter Springs, Florida became home to Kellyco’s 40 “Metal Detector Experts” and the worlds largest selection of modern, metal detectors – for both beginners and old pros.

1991 - Kellyco continued partnering with manufactures, and in 1991 Kellyco team members went to the Garrett factory to inspect the brand new GTA, Master Hunter, and Freedom Series detectors before they were introduced to the market. Kellyco clearly has an edge on both the industry and the technology thanks to decades spent side-by-side with the innovators of many of the finest metal detectors.

1996 - In 1996 Stu was invited to visit the Minelab headquarters in Adelaide, S. Australia to learn more about the sophistication of multi-frequency, Broad Band Spectrum (BBS) detectors. Again, Kellyco’s team members were given a huge knowledge a huge knowledge advantage in the new technology for metal detecting, and were the first ones introduced to wave after wave of new technology – including Minelab’s Full Band Spectrum (FBS) technology. 1998 - On December 5, 1998 Kellyco went live with the first version of the website. KellycoDetectors.com didn’t start off too fancy, but was a pioneer in the online access of metal detecting equipment and good, solid, information. As more and more people gained access to the internet, Kellyco’s online reputation for customer service and support grew to enormous proportions.

2001 - Meanwhile, Stu and John continued their good relationships with metal detector manufactures and in 2001 they participated in a VIP Sales Meeting held by Garrett Metal Detector’s for top selling dealers. Only the biggest and the best were invited and Kellyco was at the top of the list.

2005 - In 2005 Kellyco expanded online sales and became accessible worldwide. Making metal detectors and treasure hunting accessories available both in an online store and auctions brought a significant amount of business to Kellyco. At this point Kellyco became globally synonymous with everything related to metal detecting as they were only a click away from the world.

Known for excellence and information, Kellyco spent several years involved with local law enforcement and security companies. Even FBI members, trained to find the smallest piece of evidence or clues, were given tips by Kellyco team members and were given recommendations for detectors by Kellyco certified detector experts.

2006 - In 2006 Stu acknowledged the power of hurricanes to not only turn up great beach treasure but to also pause business. In the name of productivity Kellyco invested $50,000 in a complete generator back-up system to ensure that Florida’s Hurricanes don’t keep world-wide customers from getting the best service and metal detecting equipment Kellyco has to offer. A year later, the Kellyco shipping department was expanded four times its previous size and the warehouse was completely rearranged to enable more efficient packaging of orders. And soon after that a 64 line phone system was installed to ensure all of our customers talk to real people, no matter what.
